A new article in Science Daily summarizes a University of Iowa researcher, Kim Johnson that proposed just that.
The Original research reported in the August 2008 issue of Physiology and Behavior details the study that linked salt cravings and symptoms of depression.
"Things that normally would be pleasurable for rats didn't elicit the same degree of relish, which leads us to believe that a salt deficit and the craving associated with it can induce one of the
key symptoms associated with depression," Johnson said.
ed. With so much work in the Central Valley needed to manage salt and the difficulty of managing it, anything but salt with an antidepressant quality would be more welcome.
